Double Dutch Sudoku Advent (9) - Next to Nine vs. Battenburg

(Published on 9. December 2014, 12:00 by Richard)

Eisbär (Arvid) and I have created a fresh sudoku advent calendar in which we combine a well known variant with a relatively unknown variant every day. Combining variants leads to interesting and surprising new solving techniques.

Logically solvable
All puzzles can be solved completely logically although the logic is sometimes well hidden and is inherent to the combination of restrictions that the different types offer. For that reason we have written some solving hints for most of the puzzles, published in a very tiny font. If you want to read the hints, simply copy these in a text editor and enlarge the font size.

Next to Nine
Place the digits from 1 to 9 in every row, column and 3x3-block. Digits outside the grid are all the direct neighbours of the 9 in the respective row or column.

Battenburg
Wherever 2 odd and 2 even digits form a 2x2 checkerboard pattern, a Battenburg marking is given. If there is no marking, the above pattern is not allowed.

Solving hints

All 9’s at the edges can be placed:
9 in C7; C3, R8 and R6.
The next step of major importance is the placement of the 9 in C5. Since the Next-to-Nine-clues in R4 and C5 are exactly the same, 9 in C5 cannot be placed in R45C5, so has to go in R7C5. 9 in C4 in ...
Another important hint for this puzzle is to look for places where a Battenburg pattern may not be formed, so you know where odd/even digits have to be placed or cannot be placed.
Example 1: R6C9 = 1; R7C9 = even; R67C8 = Pair {27}. R6C8 not even since there is no BB-marking!
Example 2: R7C8 = 2; R8C8 = 1; R7C7 not odd!

Solution code: The main diagonals, first from top left to bottom right, then top right to bottom left.

Added 'alle' in NtN-instructions.

@SilBer: maybe you are right. In standard Next to Nine puzzles this problem doesn't appear, since all clues outside the grid are given and it is obvious where only one neighbour is. See for an example puzzle id=0001VG.

Klasse!
